The Great Kindness Challenge

In conjunction with our Bernstein unit – Building a Habitat of Happiness – Hawthorn Elementary South will be participating in The Great Kindness Challenge next week – January 25th through January 29th.

What is the Great Kindness Challenge?

The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible.  On Friday, January 22 students will be receiving checklists with suggested random acts of kindness listed.  When students accept the challenge they can prove that bullying is weak and kindness is strength.

Where?

The acts of kindness are to be accomplished anytime at school, at home, or throughout the community.

Grade Level Service Projects…

During the week of January 25th, each grade level will be working on ways to promote kindness and happiness throughout our school, community and/or world.  As a grade level, students will conduct some type of service project centered on helping others.  The following is a brief overview.

Kindergarten: Students will be creating Valentine’s Day Cards for a local nursing home.

1st Grade: First Grade is taking part in Project Linus on Thursday, January 28th.  Project Linus provides homemade blankets to children in need.

2nd Grade:  Students will be creating Valentine’s Day cards for patients at the Autumn Leaves of Vernon Hills Nursing home.

3rd Grade: Students will be writing letters to other children currently at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

4th Grade: The fourth grade will be working with Placing Paws, a pet foster and rescue. In conjunction with this rescue a representative will be visiting the fourth grade classes on Monday, January 25th, in order to explain what they do as a rescue and how the students can help their cause.  This is an outstanding opportunity for the students to see how their actions impact the community near and far. By starting with this assembly the students will be able to recognize what they can offer to Placing Paws.

5th Grade: Fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by collecting loose change in homeroom classrooms.  In addition, the 5th grade will be making cards for terminally ill children through Cardz4Kidz.  Here is the link with more information: cardzforkidz.org.

Parents, please feel free to take on the Challenge as well…  Pay it forward, volunteer at a local organization, say thank you to someone.  Kindness is contagious.  Thank you so much for your support!
