Twenty 4th and 5th grade students participated in Elementary South’s Scripps National Spelling Bee contest on January 9. Standing before a large audience of students, teachers and parents, they carefully spelled out tough words such as vortices, bindi, nefarious and jodhpurs. However, after 11 rounds, only three students were left: Avin K., Parth V. and Debarghya D. Debarghya, a fourth grade student in Ms. Wagner’s class, won the competition by spelling the word plasma correctly. Parth V., a fourth grade student in Ms. Studer’s class, was the runner up. Debarghya will go on to the sectional competition in Deerfield in February. Congratulations to all the students.
