Welcome to the HES family!

It is truly an honor to celebrate my thirtieth year in education at Hawthorn Elementary South School.  I spent eleven years as a classroom teacher, four years as an assistant principal and am now in my fifteenth year as Principal at Elementary South.  I am extremely proud to be part of a team of educators who believe that all children can learn and who will go above and beyond for every student in our care.  It is our mission to inspire all students to embrace learning in an ever-changing world.  We believe in educating the “whole child” and meeting the needs of all learners both academically and emotionally.

At HES, we have approximately 700 students and 100 staff members.  Thirty homeroom teachers work with our related arts teachers, physical education teachers and learning center team to educate our students.  We follow our Guaranteed and Viable curriculum based on rigorous learning standards.  We have high expectations for our students and staff and value our family and community partnerships.  The PTO, the Elementary South Family Alliance, and our Welcome Council all work together to strengthen our community, enhance relationships, and raise additional funds for our school to extend our curriculum.

HES is a neighborhood school where students, staff, parents and community members work together to build trusting relationships and make the school a joyful place to build a love of learning.   We are proud of the work that has been done to establish our school as a National Blue Ribbon School!  We create a family atmosphere where every child can work to his or her potential each day.  If ever you have any questions regarding HES, please do not hesitate to contact me at (847) 990-4800 or martinj@hawthorn73.org.
