Empathy Master WorkWelcome to the 2013-2014 school year!  The entire Hawthorn Elementary South Staff is so excited to have the children back in the building.  We are buzzing with excitement for the new school year to begin!  I look forward to seeing so many of you at the “Back to School Bash”, “New to South Parent Night”, and “Get Acquainted Day”.  By attending events such as these, it shows us how important school is to your family.  Thank you for partnering with us in educating your child.  Our family alliance does such a great job planning the bash.  If you are interested in helping to plan our family events for the year, please contact the school office and we will put you in touch with our alliance members.

I would also like to thank the Hawthorn PTO for over $8,000.00 that was given to the building to support learning for the children.  This money will be allocated to provide opportunities for teachers to extend curriculum with field trips, assemblies, resources and materials, and any other equipment to help meet student needs. The PTO is also donating $36,000.00 to support technology in the district.  We are so excited about our new iPads and projection systems in the classrooms.  It is awesome!  We appreciate your continued support!  If you are able to, please join the PTO and support our students.  After all, you are the “P” in the PTO.

This year at South our Bernstein Unit will focus on EMPATHY.  We will be studying the work of the famous graffiti artist, Keith Haring, and will work to internalize that empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.  This unit will remind us to value and respect each individual’s similarities and differences and will emphasize the importance of having empathy for others.  I am confident that our students will have a great year full of learning and social emotional growth.  We are all looking forward to the best school year ever!

As always, if you have any questions or input, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.  I can be reached at or (847) 990-4800.  Wishing you all a wonderful fall!

All the best,

Jill Martin and Christy Hunter
