February 10th marks the100th fabulous day of the school year. The school year is flying by and we are very busy learning!

February is filled with fun and excitement at HES!  We look forward to honoring Honest Abe Lincoln’s birthday and Valentine’s Day.  Please remember that we will be celebrating with parties and cards but the whole district will not be allowing candy attached to cards.  Pencils and other non-edible treats are AOK!  Room parents will be the only ones allowed to bring food for the parties.  We look forward to a day full of LOVE and KINDNESS on 2/12.

We just finished winter MAP testing for all grade levels, AIMSWEB testing in Kindergarten and First Grade and ACCESS testing for English language learners is happening right now. Testing results will be sent home with Trimester 2 Report Cards.  Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on 2/25 and 2/26.  Conferences at this point in the year are optional. There is no school on Friday due to conferences.

And that’s not all – the book fair begins on 2/22-2/26 with a FABULOUS FAMILY FUN NIGHT on 2/19!  Join us for the awesome BMX show! On Feb 26th, we will also have a GRAND EVENT where grandparents can bring their grandchildren to the book fair and spoil them with the gift of books!  See more information from our PTO.

November 2015 Newsletter

These beautiful fall days remind us all that we have so much to be THANKFUL for.  We live in a wonderful community that supports our children and their education!  There are exciting activities going on in the classrooms, and everyone is working hard to challenge students to reach their potential and improve student achievement.

Halloween was a great event at South! Thank you to all the room parents who volunteered for our Halloween parties.  Everyone had a spooktacular time!

Looking into November, we have the end of the first trimester, report cards, and conferences. We look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your child’s progress.  At conferences, be sure to visit the book fair in the main hallway. A portion of the proceeds from the sale allows us to buy new books for our library.

In October, we continued our Bernstein Unit on creating a habitat of happiness with Unity Day. It was awesome to see all the classrooms come together to unite against bullying at Elementary South! Ever wonder what the classrooms are really like?  If you are interested in seeing your child in the classroom, please come visit us on American Education Week’s Parent Visitation Day – TUESDAY, NOVEMEBER 17, 2015.  See the schedule in the box below.

Please remember that we only celebrate Birthdays at our school wide BIRTHDAY BASH!  You will get a letter when it is your child’s birthday month inviting you to hokey pokey with the Principals.

Thank you again for your continued support.  As always, if you have any questions or input, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.  I can be reached at martinj@hawthorn73.org or (847) 990-4800.

September 2015 Newsletter

The school year is off to a wonderful start.  It is so great to have the children back in the building.  Excitement is in the air as 736 students are ready to learn and grow with us.  It was so great to see so many of you at Opening Activities.  Thanks to the family alliance for planning a wonderful “BACK TO SCHOOL BASH”.  It was so much fun to kick off our year bouncing on the moonwalks, eating ice cream, and bonding with our Elementary South Family.

We had a great kick-off assembly to introduce our BERNSTEIN UNIT on creating a “Habitat of Happiness”. This year we will explore the importance of joyful learning and taking responsibility for making our environment happy.  At that assembly, we reviewed our behavior code and bus expectations with all students in the building.  Please make sure you review these documents with your child and sign that you support our founding behaviors of RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY.  If you have not returned your code of conduct, please do so as soon as possible.  It is important that we have 100% support of all Hawthorn Elementary South family members supporting respect and responsibility in our school.

If you have any questions or input, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.  I can be reached at martinj@hawthorn73.org or (847) 990-4800.  Wishing you all a wonderful fall!

All the best,

January 2015 Newsletter

Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends.  As we move into 2015, I wish you all good health, joy, and a school year filled with academic and social growth!  It is an exciting time here at Elementary South this month.  On Friday, we will celebrate READ 2015.  Everyone is invited to snuggle up in his or her pajamas and drop everything and read for 2015 seconds.  Thank you to the PTO who will be providing cookies for our event!

As we move into the new year, we continue our Bernstein Unit on Making Connections and the ability to overcome obstacles (hence the bridge).  Every grade level will be making a class goal and individual goals to try to overcome a personal obstacle for the new year.

In the coming weeks, our kindergarten and first grade students will be given the AIMSWEB benchmark assessment in order to monitor their progress.  Many students will participate in ACCESS testing and we are preparing for the PARCC assessment in grades 3-5.  We will do our very best to prepare students for the testing without putting added stress or pressure on them.  Our philosophy continues to be, if we continue to teach the Hawthorn Comprehensive Curriculum based on the Common Core Standards, the students will be prepared and will make academic growth.

Thank you again for your continued support.  As always, if you have any questions or input, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.  I can be reached at martinj@hawthorn73.org or (847) 990-4800.

April 2014 Newsletter

Clip Art

Welcome back!  This is an exciting time because we are beginning to plan for the next school year. We have already received many questions about placement.  Our staff will begin the class building process at the end of April or beginning of May for the 2014-2015 school year.  This is one of our most important tasks to prepare for the upcoming year.  Throughout this process, our goal is to place students in the best possible learning setting for them.  We will try to build classes that are balanced in terms of learning needs and styles, gender, emotional and social development, and academic achievement.

We welcome parent input in this process, as we recognize that parents know their children better than anyone else.  If you would like to offer insight, share your perspective, or express a need on behalf of your child, we invite you to write a letter.  Because it is very difficult to grant requests for specific teachers, we ask that your letter focus on your child’s learning style, significant learning experiences for him/her, and/or the type of teaching style to which your child responds best.  Please do not request a specific teacher.

We ask that all letters be submitted no later than Friday, May 2, 2014.   We will use the information you provide, along with input from teachers, to place your child in a classroom that will best meet his or her needs.

This year, the registration process will continue to be on-line. Starting April 11th, you will receive a letter from INFOSNAP with the login information needed to register your child.  If you do not have computer access, the district office will have computers available for you to register your child. Watch for more information coming soon.  Please register on line by April 30, 2014 so we can place your child in a classroom for next year.

Thank you again for your continued support.  As always, if you have any questions or input, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.  I can be reached at martinj@hawthorn73.org or (847) 990-4800.

All the best,

Jill Martin Signature
