The school year is off to a wonderful start. It is so great to have the children back in the building. There is an excitement in the air as 675 students are ready to learn and grow with us. It was great seeing so many of you at “Back To School Nights” and other opening events. We had a great kick-off assembly to introduce our BERNSTEIN UNIT on EMPATHY. This year we will understand and share the feelings of others and explore what it is like to “Take a walk in someone else’s shoes.” At that assembly, we reviewed our behavior code and bus expectations with all students in the building. We have received 95% of the codes signed by students and parents showing support of our program. If you have not returned your code of conduct, please do so as soon as possible. It is important that we have 100% support of all Hawthorn Elementary South family members supporting respect and responsibility in our school.
Have you seen our NEW ART WALL? As you enter the building, you will see samples of our very own Hawthorn Elementary South Artists. You can also sit on our “creation piece” bench made by our student last year showing 700 pieces of abstract art put together. Can you find your artwork on the bench?
We are also forming a new environmental club. The “GREEN TEAM” is made up of fourth graders who are passionate about saving our planet. Watch for the great activities that the green team is planning for our school. Their first meeting is September 11, 2013 and they can’t wait to start on water bottle recycling, growing tomatoes in our green houses, and making our school more waste free.
If you have any questions or input, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me. I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or (847) 990-4800. Wishing you all a wonderful fall!
All the best,

Please remember that students should arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 am. During that time we will have a morning recess. Adult supervision begins at 8:15 on the playground. Students will enter the building at 8:30 and should be in their seats and ready to learn at 8:40. Thank your for your support with this!

The Hawthorn Parent Teacher Organization works so hard on behalf of our students. If you are able to support this organization, we would really appreciate your involvement. Membership is $10.00 and these funds go directly to the students. For more information, please contact Amy Goldenberg our school vice president. And remember… you are the “P” in the PTO.
[message_box title=”Fall Weather” color=”yellow”]
With fall weather coming and going, this is just a reminder that we do go outside for recess. It is also very difficult to regulate the temperature in the building. Please have your child dress appropriately for the changing temperatures. Layers are best!
